john maus – composer, performer, record producer, college professor – is not your run-of-the-mill indie musician. after studying music at the california institute of the arts, along with co-hort and fellow eccentric ariel pink, he later went on to pursue a degree in political philosophy at the european graduate school in saas fee, switzerland. such pretensions for the avant garde and academic are evinced in interviews like the one below – in his own words:
“the appearance of a human being is something that isn’t self evident or isn’t something we can take for granted … what we all really want is to see one another and be seen”
his music, meanwhile, aspires to animate the “hysterical body” – his and yours – with buoyancy and propulsion, reverie and reflection, tension, and, ultimately, release. we feel the spirit.
stream “streetlight”, the dreamy lead track from 2011′s we must become the pitiless censors of ourselves.
