pop is always eating itself … on “take care” we get a re-sample of jamie xx and gil scott-heron’s ‘i’ll take care of u’ — itself originally a remix of the scott-heron track ‘i’ll take care of you‘ — featuring vocals by rihanna, who first collaborated with drake on the no. 1 hit ‘what’s my name’, which shares its title with the ’94 no. 1 rap single by snoop dogg, which features samples of funkadelic’s “(not just) knee deep” and george clinton’s “atomic dog”.

is any of that a crucial to appreciating the track? heck no. it’s self-evidently great. this sort of re-creation is to be expected with pop music, anyway, as pop is always the product of an ongoing conversation between art and culture. and in a world where information channels are increasingly  fragmented, it’s nice to have something we can all revel in, without having to resort to a lowest common denominator. at its best, pop transcends us, and we aspire to find something of ourselves in it. take care, the album, seems to have achieved as much.

the eponymous lp, which will no doubt debut at no. 1, drops on tuesday. peep it here.
